Job Description

About the Documentation Program

The Documentation Program was launched in October 2015 to document the crimes committed against the Yazidis by ISIL. Since then, the Documentation Team has been collecting testimonies and documenting crime scenes in order to build an accurate historical record and evidence base to support advocacy, accountability, and justice efforts against ISIL.

Responsibilities and Tasks: 

Under the supervision of the Legal Advocacy Coordinator, the Advocacy and Outreach Officer is expected to fulfill the following duties:

Case-building:

  • Maintain and update portfolio of clients in ongoing cases
  • Update the clients regularly about ongoing cases
  • Ensure all clients apply for the reparation scheme of Yazidi Survivors Law (YSL) and provide support in the process where needed
  • Reach out to survivors for processing of requests for information and case-building
  • Manage the logistical aspects of clients’ participation (either in-person or remotely) in investigations and trials abroad
  • Translate from Arabic or Sinjari-Kurmanji to English and vice versa in meetings between the Legal Advocacy Department, survivors, War Crimes Units (WCU) and partners

Report development:

  • Support the development of best-practice interview guidelines - carrying out interviews with survivors and other stakeholders, organizing focus group discussions (FGDs) and translate responses
  • Support the drafting of reports, including supporting with organizing FGDs with survivors to inform the drafting of reports
  • Reach out to survivors for follow up questions where needed

Coordination:

  • Coordinate with and represent Yazda at the Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR)
  • Coordinate with the Directorate for Survivors Affairs and maintain in-writing updates about the Yazidi Survivors Law (YSL)
  • Coordinate with partners to support the survivors-centered implementation of the YSL to avoid duplication of services and raise awareness of rights and entitlements under the law
  • Attend monthly calls with the NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq (NCCI). 
  • Coordinate with the Yazidi Survivors Network (YSN) for work related to the USG work plan
  • Support with building new coalitions with local partners to support accountability and other transitional justice efforts

Advocacy:

  • Support the Legal Advocacy department in implementing an advocacy and outreach strategy
  • Maintain the stakeholder tracker, and the advocacy meeting and workshop tracker
  • Support implementation of media coverage of legal advocacy work, including preparing social media posts and photos and coordinating with the Media Coordinator
  • Organize workshops to promote reports drafted under USG
  • Organize advocacy meetings with relevant stakeholders, such as local law enforcement and judiciary actors
  • Implement outreach campaigns in the affected community by informing them about investigations, legal cases, and other transitional justice measures
  • The Legal Advocacy Outreach Officer may also be asked to support other activities within the scope of the project

Qualifications & requirements

Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in law, human rights, political science, advocacy or related field is desired
  • 3 years’ experience working in NGOs in human rights, advocacy, legal programming, humanitarian assistance
  • Experience working with survivors of trauma, including gender-based violence, preferably with experience related to crimes committed by ISIL
  • Applied understanding of the trauma-informed approach
  • Knowledge of best practice principles related to confidentiality and the protection of sensitive information/data
  • Knowledge of the context of Sinjar and Iraq, including details of the nature of crimes committed by ISIL against the Yazidi population, including gender-based violence related crimes and crimes against children
  • Language skills –
    • Fluency in Arabic and Sinjari-Kurmanji is mandatory
    • Good command of English is mandatory
  • Computer skills related to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
