Job Description

Background and Rationale:

The Emergency and Resilience Livelihoods intervention in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, implemented by a consortium composed of Cesvi Fondazione Onlus and Terre des hommes (TdH) and funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), aims to support vulnerable categories, including refugees, displaced persons, and host communities. As part of this project, Activity 1 focuses on supporting small and medium-sized entrepreneurs through business development and handcraft production activities. To ensure the success of this activity, the project seeks experienced mentors who can provide guidance and support to the beneficiaries.

Objectives

The primary objective of the Handcraft Trainer is to deliver practical and hands-on training sessions that enable participants to learn and develop various handcrafting techniques.

Scope of Work

The Trainer will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Design a well-structured and progressive handcrafting training curriculum tailored to the interests and abilities of the participants.
  • Ensure the training program covers fundamental techniques, advanced skills, and product development.
  • conduct a series of training sessions, totaling 10 days, to provide comprehensive handcrafting instruction to the group of 10 women participants.
  • Facilitate hands-on learning through practical demonstrations and interactive exercises.
  • Guide and mentor the participants in refining their handcrafting abilities and achieving consistent quality in their creations.
  • Provide individualized attention and support to address the specific needs and challenges of each participant.
  • Encourage the participants to explore various handcrafting styles and materials, fostering innovation in their designs.
  • Advise on the development of unique and marketable handcrafted products.
  • Business and Marketing Guidance:
  • Share insights on business strategies and product marketing to enable the participants to explore income-generating opportunities.
  • Offer guidance on branding, pricing, and identifying potential markets for their handcrafted products.
  • Conduct periodic assessments to measure the participants' progress and skill development.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement. 

Time Frame:

  • The training activities will take place over the course of 10 training days for the handcrafting training in Erbil / Duhok, for a total of 10 women per location.
  • The trainers will be stationed in the urban and peri-urban areas of Erbil / Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the project activities are being implemented.

Knowledge and experience for the position

  • Handcrafting Techniques: The trainer has an in-depth understanding of various handcrafting techniques, including but not limited to knitting, embroidery, weaving, pottery, and other traditional crafts. Their broad knowledge allows them to deliver comprehensive training that covers a wide range of skills.
  • Design Innovation: The trainer is well-versed in design principles and is adept at fostering innovation in handcrafting. They encourage participants to explore new materials, colors, and patterns, resulting in unique and marketable products that stand out in the market.
  • Product Development: With a keen eye for detail, the trainer guides participants in refining their creations and achieving consistent quality in their handcrafted products. They emphasize the importance of product development, ensuring that each item meets the highest standards.
  • Market Trends: The trainer keeps abreast of current market trends and demands for handcrafted products. This knowledge enables them to offer valuable insights on creating items that appeal to the target audience and align with market preferences.
  • Business Strategies: Understanding the value of entrepreneurship, the trainer imparts valuable knowledge on business strategies to the participants. They offer guidance on pricing, branding, and marketing, empowering the participants to turn their passion for handcrafting into successful income-generating ventures.

  • Teaching and Training: The trainer has a proven track record of delivering handcrafting training to diverse audiences. They have honed their teaching and communication skills, ensuring that participants grasp the concepts effectively and derive maximum benefit from the training.
  • Artisan Background: Having a background as a skilled artisan themselves, the trainer brings firsthand experience and expertise to the training program. Their hands-on experience in handcrafting enables them to connect with the participants on a deeper level.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: The trainer's experience in working with diverse communities, including vulnerable populations, reflects their cultural sensitivity and understanding of the challenges faced by participants. They create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all.
  • Collaboration: Throughout their career, the trainer has collaborated with various organizations, artisans, and entrepreneurs to promote traditional crafts and sustainable livelihoods. Their experience in networking and fostering partnerships enhances the overall impact of the training program.
  • Training Program Development: The trainer has successfully designed and implemented handcrafting training programs in the past, tailoring the curriculum to suit the needs of participants and ensuring a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

 Reporting:

  • The trainers will report directly to the Coordinator or designated focal point. They will be required to submit regular progress reports (Training report including Per – post and training evaluation “Hard copy including beside reports)  and collaborate closely with the project team to ensure smooth implementation of the training activities

Qualifications & requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Educational Background:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. A higher degree or specialized certification in a relevant handcrafting field is a plus.

 Handcrafting Expertise:

  • Demonstrated expertise and proficiency in a specific handcrafting skill, such as knitting, embroidery, weaving, pottery, or any other traditional craft.
  • Proven ability to create high-quality handcrafted products showcasing advanced techniques and craftsmanship.

 Language Skills:

  • Excellent written and spoken Kurdish, and Arabic proficiency.

 Cultural Sensitivity

  • Sensitivity to the cultural context and understanding of the challenges faced by women participants in vulnerable communities.
  • Ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that respects and values participants' diverse backgrounds.

 Flexibility and Mobility:

  • Availability to work within the project's specified duration and readiness to travel to various project sites within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as required.

 Artisan Background

  • Previous experience as a skilled artisan in the specific handcrafting skill being taught, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship.
